 EASTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
SPEECH BY PREMIER STOFILE
 AT FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATIONS
AT GRAFF REINET
ON 27 APRIL 2001

History bequeathed upon our generation the most difficult tasks emanating from Freedom. Now that the horrendous past is behind us and no
one wants to be associated with it, we must:

1) Build the South Africa of our dreams. A free, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous nation;

2) Reduce and finally eradicate the legacy of that horrible past. This legacy manifests itself in unequal social services, infra-structure
and literacy levels. It dictates the colour of poverty and affluence and of development and under-development;

3) Deal decisively with HIV/AIDS which threatens to wipe out the beneficiaries of our hard-won liberation;

4) And to fight and defeat crime so that our communities may live in happiness and freedom.

By the same token, we are the first fruits of a generation that will live in dignity equality and justice for all. Many of those who
sacrificed all for us to enjoy these are no longer with us. In honour and rememberance of such heroes and heroines of our country, let us
celebrate our freedom in dignity, with joy and with a sense of rededication of ourselves to the values of a freed and democratic South
Africa.
